How Many App Store Screenshots Should You Prepare?
Screenshot count is a store rule and a story decision. Apple allows one to 10 screenshots per set. Google Play allows up to eight per supported device type and says a listing needs at least two screenshots total to publish. Use those boundaries to plan the handoff, then include only frames that add product understanding.
Separate Apple's set limit from your story
For Apple, one set can contain one to 10 screenshots. That is a permitted range, not a requirement to fill all 10 slots. Start with the core sequence, then add a frame only when it explains a distinct product task, audience use case, or result that belongs in the listing.
- Write the product job for each planned frame.
- Remove repeated screenshots before trying to reach a count.
- Check that the final Apple set stays between one and 10 images.
Group Google Play screenshots by device type
Google Play allows up to eight screenshots for each supported device type. Its publishing guidance says you need a minimum of two screenshots total to publish. Keep the device groups separate in your release plan so a phone count is not mistaken for a tablet or other supported type.
- List the supported Google Play device types for the release.
- Assign each screenshot to one device-type group.
- Confirm each group count and the two-screenshot total publishing minimum.
Use large-screen guidance when it applies
Google recommends at least four screenshots for large screens such as tablets and Chromebooks, sized between 1,080 and 7,680 pixels, with 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait. Treat that guidance as part of a separate large-screen composition rather than stretching a phone story into a wider target.
- Confirm whether tablets or Chromebooks belong in the release.
- Prepare a large-screen sequence with the required orientation and scale.
- Leave out frames that add no information to the large-screen experience.
Review the count after localization and export
A set can gain duplicate or stale frames when captions change across locales or targets. Count the final files by set, then open the exports and check dimensions, format, transparency, and organization. ZIP download stays available for a manual store upload; Pro and Scale can also push the saved ZIP into the listing.
- Count each final Apple set and Google device-type group.
- Check localized files for duplicate or leftover source-language frames.
- Export the reviewed files and complete the store upload manually.

Questions to ask before handoff
Do I need 10 screenshots for Apple?
No. Apple permits one to 10 screenshots per set. Choose the number needed to explain the product clearly and avoid repeated frames.
How many Google Play screenshots can I upload?
Google Play allows up to eight for each supported device type. Its publishing guidance also says a listing needs at least two screenshots total.
Should a phone and tablet share the same screenshot set?
Plan them by device type and review the actual product experience for each. A large-screen composition may need different framing and hierarchy.
