Google Play Screenshot Requirements: The 2:1 Rule Explained

Google Play's screenshot rules include a simple aspect-ratio limit that catches common Android exports. Check the long side, the short side, the file format, and the device-type count before you prepare the final handoff.

Use an accepted file and pixel range

Google Play accepts JPEG or 24-bit PNG screenshots with no alpha channel. Each dimension must be at least 320 pixels and no more than 3840 pixels. You can upload up to eight screenshots for each supported device type.

  1. Export JPEG or 24-bit PNG rather than a PNG that retains transparency.
  2. Measure both dimensions and confirm each falls between 320 and 3840 pixels.
  3. Count screenshots by device type instead of counting one mixed folder.

Check the two-to-one aspect-ratio rule

Google Play says the longest side of a screenshot cannot be more than twice the shortest side. A 1080×2400 image has a 2.22:1 ratio, so it exceeds the limit and is invalid. A 1080×2160 image is exactly 2:1, so it meets the aspect-ratio boundary while also staying within the stated pixel range.

  1. Identify the longer and shorter sides after the image is rotated into its final orientation.
  2. Confirm long side ≤ short side × 2 before exporting the set.
  3. Do not treat a common phone resolution as proof that the store accepts the ratio.

Separate device types and large-screen work

Google Play lists phones, 7-inch and 10-inch tablets, Chromebooks, Android TVs, Wear OS watches, Android Automotive OS cars, and Android XR headsets as supported device types. For large screens such as Chromebooks and tablets, Google recommends at least four screenshots sized between 1,080 and 7,680 pixels, using 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait.

  1. Group the files by the device type they are meant to represent.
  2. Prepare a large-screen composition when the app supports tablets or Chromebooks.
  3. Use the device-specific requirements on Google's page for TV, watch, car, or XR listings.

Meet the publishing minimum

Google Play's page says you need a minimum of two screenshots total to publish. That publishing minimum is separate from the limit of up to eight screenshots for each device type and from the larger-screen recommendation.

  1. Confirm the release has at least two screenshots total.
  2. Keep the strongest product evidence in the first files a visitor will see.
  3. Review every file at listing size after the ratio and format checks pass.
